Using video can boost your business inside and out… if you do it right. Today we’ll begin a series of posts featuring some of the questions we hear from prospective clients about why they should use video and how to use it correctly.

1. “Why should I consider using video as part of my marketing strategy?”

Because it works. Consider these highlights from an article by DigitalSherpa

  • Videos increase people’s understanding of your product or service by 74%
  • Click-through rates increase 23 times when marketers include a video in an email
  • 80% of your online visitors will watch a video, while only 20 percent will actually read content in its entirety

With a video, people can SEE what your product does and watch your people performing a service. They’ll pay closer attention and retain more of the content than if they had to read a written description. This holds true whether the content is about a product, a service, or a process.

Remember that Google searches tend to rank websites with video higher than sites that don’t feature video.

In fact, after Google, YouTube itself is the world’s second most used search engine. This is why we recommend that clients set up a YouTube channel for their business, and use it to host their marketing videos. The most important videos should also be embedded to play directly from the company website.

But remember that YouTube is the “wild wild west “ of the video world, and viewers can easily get distracted. So any links that you use to promote your videos should direct viewers to the videos embedded on your website, rather than to your YouTube channel. Just make sure you have a strategy in place to get prospects who do find you on YouTube to easily find their way to your website.

2. “Video sounds like a good idea. Can I save money by shooting my own video with a smartphone?”

Yes, you can. You can also save money by doing your own dental work with a mirror and a pair of pliers.
While many smartphones are capable of recording high quality video, virtually all of the good looking videos you may have seen that were “shot on smartphones” have also involved a substantial crew behind the scenes who were utilizing additional lighting, professional microphones, tripods and other camera stabilizers, plus the services of skilled scriptwriters, editors, and graphic artists.

Without those additional elements being addressed, the footage you shoot with your cell phone just ends up looking like you shot it with your cell phone. If the competition is using professional quality video, you won’t be doing yourself any favors by presenting dark, shaky video that is plagued by scratchy or hollow sounding audio.
